I am having some issues getting my new radio working. The previous owner mucked up the wiring and the bezel already so I'm not too worried about changes to either of those (though I might be interested in a new bezel eventually).
It had no radio when I bought it and my parents purchased me a unit for my birthday. I think I'm having trouble with too high an impedance to pull any real amps again, so instead of pulling through accessory I might pull through a toggle since the radio has an in-line barrel fuse anyway. Anyone see a problem with this? Just gonna run a new ground wire and 12v unswitched for the memory as well.
Also anyone have any speaker suggestions for two additional rear speakers (behind the seat maybe)? I don't have much to spend but don't need super high volume either. May get a lowprofile sub for under the seat but don't have the money right now. As far as the current setup it has two 6.5" two ways from lighting audio.
I've been thinking about adding these:
Also just in case my truck is an 82 F100 flareside, and I have 9 inches of space from cab wall to the back of my seat on the bottom (I'm 6'2") I'm obviously not going for a killer system but want something that works pretty good and doesn't break the bank. I'm open for suggestions. Thanks in advance.
You should not have to run another power wire, the factory wire has plenty of capacity for that radio. You can go ahead and do it if you like, but I would think it's going to get aggravating having to turn the switch off all the time, and if you turn the radio down all the way for some reason and forget it's on, then forget to turn the switch off, well then you know what happens next.
That powered 8 inch woofer is going to be the best performer of the selection you have. Those 6x9 enclosures don't sound that great if bass is what you are looking for. The speakers you have now will provide all the highs you need already.
The problem is that at some point there was water leaking or just over time the corrosion in the fuse block has gotten so bad that in many places there is so high an impedance in the system that the system can't pass any amps. It happened with my horn in another thread, but scraping off the fuse didn't work this time.
I'm not looking for super heavy bass, never really cared that much for that. I just want a good mid and high range with a decent amount of bass.
I still haven't heard the ones I have but one of the cones (driver side) looked cracked, so I may have to replace that. Are there any better enclosures to use that will fit in my space behind the seat? Or somewhere else out of the way to mount something?
If sound quality is what you're after, then I'd highly recommend sticking with brand names that are more familiar in that arena. Most of the car stuff out there is garbage. Boston Acoustic speakers makes a fantastic speaker! Honestly, just one pair of 6.5 door speakers will rival the other brands being mentioned. I also would've recommended an Alpine or Sony head unit in the same price range. They produce better signal to noise characteristics, the most instrumental statistic in defining how well any audio source will sound. And some day when the budget allows, a JL Audio amp is a pretty nice addition.
I agree on the BA speakers. I installed a complete system from them many years ago in a Miata and was amazed at how well they sounded. The 6.5's would actually move my pants cuff on low notes, and the bass was amazing. So much so that the owner of the high-end audio store in Houston where I bought them called everyone out to listen to it. Apparently the volume of the door, which I had sealed pretty tightly, was just right to work with those speakers.
I'd check Craiglist or E-Bay for good used speakers. Better to have better quality second hand speakers than new cheapies.
Like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HARMAN-Infinity-REFERENCE-SERIES-6-inch-Auto-Speaker-652I-set-of-2-/390645740989?pt=Car_Speakers&hash=item5af44cf5bd
I've used Infinity before, and they're pretty decent.

I believe those speakers have directional tweeters, meaning they can be aimed at the listener. Makes a huge difference when you have speakers mounted to the sides as the high frequencies "beam" as opposed to the lows, which disperse.
