Well, I have started my rebuild and true to form, bad news has come my way. Thought I would be able to save some money by getting by with the 350 that is currently in the truck. But upon disassembly, we find out the motor is actually a 327 and is in pretty bad shape. At this point we are approaching the point were it will become more economical for me to simply buy a crate long block.
Any suggestions on crate motor builders, who to stay away from etc.?experiences would be greatly appreciated. Pictures to follow shortly of the tear down.
Look at it as an opportunity: Turn it back into a Ford by replacing it with something Blue Oval. Almost anything will fit.
However, if $$ are the primary concern, you can overhaul that 327 for far less than you can buy any kind of crate motor. And there is nothing wrong with a 327 (other than the fact that it's a Chevy-which is fine-in a Chevy.)
If you are on a low budget you cant get more low buck than a good used chevy 305, get one in good running condition that you can hear run first and I bet you dont spend more than $300. Around here they are all over craigslist. I have one in my 37 Buick and even with only 200 HP it moved the car just fine at highway speed in OD.
