My current bench seat seems to sit too low. Part of that is probably sagging springs. I intend to replace this seat with buckets or a newer 40/60 seat. Also, I intend to put in a tilt steering column and a smaller diameter steering wheel.
With these mods in mind, it would provide additional leg room to raise the seat by putting spacers (or by some other means) some additional height say 2 inches. Has anyone considered doing this or done it?
Obviously there is at least one "upside", but any other advantages or disadvantages?
From memory, I believe the distance from the foot well to the top of the seat front is approx 13 inches. I engineered my new seat to sit at that same height. With the new seat and tilt, I would not want it any higher. As a matter of fact, a little lower would be better I think.
I raised my seat 1.5" and my friend that is 6'4" bangs his head on bad bumps . I have too a couple times and I am 5'9" and lowered it to only 3/4" rise .

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I can (depending on the seat) add some height but maybe not more than 3/4 inch. Ought to be able to remember 3/4 for a 3/4 ton! When you get old you take what you can get! Larry, what kind of tilt do you have in your seat? I guess a better question, is what kind of seat did you put in? I am really hoping to get better tilt (ie more tilt to the rear) than in my current bench seat. I don't know if that means you have to take out the gas tank or not? Thanks.
If you want more tilt and a bit of a raise, consider grabbing the front bucket passenger seat from an Aerostar. Get two. They are nice seats and the pass. side comes with a storage compartment. Some mods will be needed, but, its doable.
The only draw back is the newer seats will never last 30 years like the older bench seats do.
If you want to try it out, just to see for yourself, cut some square pieces of 2x4 an place one at each mounting location. You'll need longer bolts. You might decide that you like it. I'm 6' and have never hit the roof. (Maybe my springs are too soft?)
Rebocardo,
Would Ford Explorer seats fit in the same was as Aerostar? I can always use more tilt and a bit of a raise!
Joe,
Good idea to just add wood spacers and try it out. Overall height of person is a factor, but some people are long legged and short waisted, also as you get older your buttocks becomes less buff effectively giving you more head clearance!
Others,
If you are hitting your head going over bumps, what kind of bumps and speed are we talking about here?
Thanks.,
Joe

I do not know since I have never owned an Explorer, I have only driven or repaired them. I did take measurements from my Aerostar to see if the seats would fit into my BII and F-100 and they do.
I took out the buckets a PO had installed in my truck and I installed a bench from an 85 Ford. Bolt in deal. If you are near Atlanta you can have these buckets. They are cloth, nearly new and free! Shoot me an e-mail off line.
William, I would like the seats (if no one else does) if they are the high bucket type, I left you an e-mail, and I live in the Atlanta area. Thanks.
Aerostar seat information:
seat lap to top of back head rest = 30 inches
seat width = 21 inches
Total seat width with the arm rests = 23 inches
Total seat depth = 25 inches
Total seat height = 35 inches without the pedestal
Total seat height = 38 inches with the pedestal.
The seats come with a slight backward incline from the mounting pedestal.
I am just shy of 5 11 and the seats are high enough so the top back of my head just touches the top of the headrest. They are good for whip lash protection.
The Aerostar seats wear well, at 189k and 70K worth of courier service, the seats are just starting to wear out and need a foam replacement. The fabric itself has been super with no splits or worn spots (we have the XLT model).
> do you mount the Aerostar seats without the pedastal?
I have never done the swap, I posted that they would fit and gave the dimensions. I have no idea about bolts holes, etc. I would mount it with the pedestal so you get the underseat storage. I just have not gotten around to putting one in yet.
