Another rear end ID
Late tonite I checked the tag on the rear end of my 71-f100 2WD. the tag reads WDMAG IFA 100 9 314A and the door panel code reads 02. Also there are 10 bolts on the front cover and none on the back side as well as a "yoke" towards the bottom that sticks out abit. I can't find my Haynes to interpret this code. Any other nite-owls out there who can help me? I seem to have hiway gears as I can go over 90-95 MPH. Any idea of gear ratio I have? I'd like to get an idea of when some preventive maint. needs to be done, ie... new lube, bearing replacement.

Thanks Steve for the answer. So is this a pretty durable rearend and is 3:1 gearing a good ratio? It seems to do what I need it to when I need to have it done. Is this r.e. prone to wear out or did I luck out when I bought it?

It's a famous axle - very popular among hot-rodders. But the 8.8" is just as strong, and will soon displace the 9" due to better options and fast-growing aftermarket support.
