I have some money I want to soak into my truck, and I'm torn between buying some hooker headers or a better intake manifold. It's a 351 Windsor with 143k on it and is totally stock and is in good shape. I'm concerned with how hard installation of either of these parts are and how much performance I will gain. Please let me know what your opinions are! (I would also like to know what sort of headers and intakes there are and which you all prefer)
Headers on your motor will probably just give it a better sound, maybe add a few horsies. If you add an intake, you will probably gain some more power over than just headers. If you add both you'll add more power.
I thought about doing an EFI intake swap on my pickup but it looked like it would end up being an expensive mod so I ended up going with FRPP headers and pullies and made some pretty good gains.
I want the 302 version of that Edelbrock intake.
I've heard good things about it, but have no personal experience with them and haven't seen any hard data (dino #'s) for them.
Unfortunately for me they are ~$500. Keep in mind that with EFI you are buying two intake manifolds (upper and lower), whereas with a carb you only need one.
As to the level of difficulty:
Shorty headers would be easiest (if your old exhaust bolts come out easily).
Intake would be next. Fairly simple IMO, but more complex.
Full length headers would be hardest, due to space issues. (at least that's what I've heard)
I think it's a tossup on which way to go first. Most people start with the headers. Even if you don't get any power, you get that rumble. And ultimately most people want the sound more than the power.
Cloim, do you seriously want the Performer Intake by Edelbrock? My buddy has the one from his Mustang he is selling it, I beleive he wants 500 CDN for it, so if you are from the U.S. it'll be a little cheaper for you...it's nicely polished too, email me for more details, joners@shaw.ca
Joners:
It's definitely on my long list. But there are too many things ahead of it that I want first. Alignment, suspension fix, stereo (someone stole my old one, and took half the dash with it), lockers...
The best "bang for the buck" is a free-flowing exhaust system, even on a stock motor. An intake swap on a stock motor may produce an 8-10 hp increase, but most header/exhaust setups will typically show double that.
