Yes you should be able to hear the pump. You can always try removing the gas cap and place your ear to the tank while some else turns the key on. It's much louder listening to it that way.

For the chime, pull the interior light relay from the fuse box and I "think" the chime goes quiet, been a while since I did that so I could be wrong.

ah gas cap, good idea. I was going to get on the ground and touch teh tank and hope to feel vibrations. Just saw a pump replacement video. doesn't look like fun to do at home.
plus i don't thave that little tool. I probably have a new fuel pump inner motor on my shelf though, so that's good. guess i'll have my son turn the key when he gets home in 20 minutes.

Any idea of how many hours labor a shop should charge for the job?

Thanks Alloro!

I had this issue before ... well, probably not the exact issue, but nonetheless, it would not start...

I could not hear the fuel pump prime up when turning over the ignition. It would crank all day long and not run....

So, I removed the fuel pump relay, and jumped the pins from 87A to I think #30. I placed the key into ACC mode, and the pump fired right up, and I heard it standing right over the engine bay (could not hear pump run during the initial 5 second prime or whatever the prime time is, nor could it be heard when the engine was running).

That alone saved me time from chasing the fuel pump. I then took a closer look under the hood and found one of my radio capacitors welded itself to the EGR exhaust pipe and grounded out, which also blew a fuse under the dash.

My symptoms were almost the same. Good Luck !

When the ignition key is turned to RUN/START the visual theft indicator will light for 2-3 seconds, but if there is a PATS issue the indicator will either blink rapidly, OR, stay on steady for > ~5 seconds.

btw when the kid came home, didn't hear anything at the gas cap.
being that i swapped relays and the wipers (delay circuit) worked with the old relay,
i'm doubting it's the relay. But i've learned to double and triple check myself
because i've made some idiot mistakes and discovered it later lol

Okay - that's not an ASD, nor an ASD relay.

In Ford speak, that is the Inertia Fuel Shutoff Switch.

It shuts the fuel pump off if the vehicle is in an accident or gets a pretty good jolt in a parking lot mishap.)

Check to be sure the IFS hasn't been tripped as it will keep the fuel pump from powering up. If it has tripped, press the button to reset it.

Allow me.

ASD relays are a Chrysler term. Ford has one too, it's called either the EEC relay, or the PCM relay.

For the 2001 Expedition, in the under hood fuse box, the Powertrain Control Module Relay #304 is the equivalent of an ASD relay.

Thank You.........I'm listening.

Don't they work just the opposite of each other?

I mean the Ford PCM Relay is what turns the PCM on and off.
In Mopar land, the ASD Relay doesn't turn the ECM on and off, the ECM actually turns the ASD Relay on and off.

Yes but the end result is the same, sensors, ignition coils, fuel injectors, etc. all lose power.
