I have a '92 Flareside 4X w/300/M5OD. The power steering has developed a slight 'hunting' condition, it turns fine, minimal whine, but in straight line driving with only minimal corrections it feels almost like it is doing a little steering on it's own. I keep the steering gear preload adjusted, I've changed out the fluid(return hose off and manually cranked lock to lock to drain), no leaks, fluid looks good. I've ruled out tire steer because I had no problem before with these tires, and hot weather makes it worse, so it's at least partly heat related. I put on a new steering stabilizer(Gabriel)which made no difference(the old one was still pretty good). I thought about a cooler, which would help, but I think there's a root problem that's causing it. I 've never gotten into power steering much before so if anyone can give me advice I'd appreciate it, is it fixable or just worn out? Thanks...Woodbutcher
Usually a "hunting" where the truck can dart a little or is not very easy to control is alignment. Could have something out of wack there.
Primary rig is:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Sunroof, and some 32" BFG Muds .
Pictures are in!!
Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Superduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed is 65mph, Go Baby Go!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Jun-02 AT 12:57 PM (EST)]I put new ball joints on this last winter and had a full alignment($60.00 to tell me everything was in spec with no adjustments) so I don't think that's it, unless the guy was goofed up. It being worse in hot weather makes me think it's something to do with the pump/fluid though. If nothing else shows up I'll probably try another(good)alignment and a cooler. I've got 265/75-15 general grabbers, which are a little bigger than 10.50's,on stock 8" rims. Would there be different specs for larger tires?
