One more thing on the Mazda tranny
Short one this time.
When I pulled the drain plug, there were a lot of metal filings stuck to it. Those are normal, from what I understand, even though the truck was never towed much. I could probably chalk that up to never having the tranny fluid changed. Ever.
What bugs me are the large pieces of metal stuck to the plug. There weren't any actual teeth, but a few shavings, some almost an inch long. I know that can't be good, but exactly how bad is it? Should I start bracing for a new transmission soon? My thinking is that I'll drive it until it dies, just keeping up on the maintenance.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Jun-02 AT 10:47 PM (EST)]I'd get a buddy for this one. Pull the magnetic plug again in a week, have your buddy stick his nose, or some other body part, up in the drain-hole to prevent losing too much fluid and, while he's having fun, check that magnet again. If you have the same debris, you may have trouble - if you have a bunch of smaller, and really fine, debris, you're just catching the last of the bad stuff. Clean it off and convince your buddy to pull out whatever he chose to stick in, and replace the plug.
