351W Stroker question
Is it going to be a strip/drag truck?
work truck?
recreational truck?
Going over 4" of stroke in a 351w block presents minor problems that will decrease driveability to some degree. However, there is many mustang owners that run 427w's to work every day and dont complain. If you are looking for 100k+ mile turn key comute to work reliabilty it would be best to stay with the shorter 3.85" stroke.
Talk to some professional engine builders that have experience in the stroking world and ask them what they think would be the best in your situation. Many of the problems created by early generation stroking have been solved in recent years and they will be able to shed some light on these areas better than me.
Trying to keep the compression down is going to be a challenge. What heads will you use? You'll probably want dished 302 pistons. I think Keith Black makes some inexpensive hypereutectic dished pistons for the 302. Reverse dome is probably a better description; they match up to most closed chamber cylinder head chambers. This makes for good quench characteristics.
If this is a truck engine, you might consider using 5.0 (302) E6SE heads; closed chambers but 69cc volume. Small valves so this is a low speed head for sure.
Did you know you can retrofit a 5.0 SEFI roller cam setup into the 5.8/351 block? Killer torque with roller cams. I'll bet you can spook some 460's with that setup.
