My Ex has started giving me trouble cranking over. I though that it might just be bad terminals so I replaced them with no luck. Every now and then when I turn it over it just clicks. Sometimes it does this two or three times and then starts. My guess is that its time for a starter, just want to make sure there is nothing else I should check first.
Sounds like you are correct....specifically the solenoid sounds light it's hurting. Easy enough to verify starter by using a meter and making sure you have 12.4v minimum on battery posts prior to cranking... monitor meter on posts. Voltage shouldn't drop below 10v and should recover back to 12v rapidly when stop cranking.
This means battery should be strong enough.
Next check resistance on main cables: 1st disconnect negative post and ohm out: neg. terminal to body and engine... should be less than .5 ohms resistance. Keep neg. disconnected.
From here check positive main on starter -make sure it's free from corrosion can ohm out from positive terminal to main positive post on stater- again should be less than .5 ohms
If it read higher than that, there's a loose connection or corrosion hidden in cable.
OR: Instead just pull starter and bench test for free in local chain parts store like Advance or Autozone
