I have a 97 explorer xlt. The other morning it would not start. It would turn over but not fire. Now all I hear is a Whining noise from what I believe would be the area of the starter. Any ideas?
I would try starting the engine and have someone watch under the hood to verify the engine is/isn't turning over. Or use a remote starter switch if you have one. I'm sure someone will tell you to jumper the solenoid with a screwdriver, but not me. Save the hillbilly diagnostics for an emergency.
A starter with no or little load sounds a lot different from a starter that has a load on it, such as when it engages the flywheel and turns the engine over. The starter may not be engaging the flywheel.

All I hear is the starter spinning. It is not engaging the flywheel at all. I guess I'll have to take the starter off and see how it looks. Not something I've ever done band it's in a tight spot. Not to mention I have 1 hand in a splint this should be interesting. Thanks for the input mikeman.
