Another P0299 under boost code

Hi guys,
I've reviewed many of the posts here for P0299 but still have questions.

After a 7k mile trip, I got back and then popped this code once home for 2 weeks. I drive my 07 as many have said, periodically driving like I stole it, ensuring I'm pushing the turbo vanes in and out.
I do feel a little less pep at top end, now topping out at 26 pounds, vs up to 28 previously.
I have a Dashboss and my vgt % goes between 14.5 to 74. I see where getting down to 15 % points to stuck vanes.
The biggest variation is my MAP kpa, registering between 2-248. It looks like normal s/be under 70 kpa.
EBP voltage seems to be good, 2.1-9.8.
Any thoughts about where to start?
I will clean the turbo if necessary but would rather start with the most obvious.
Thx.

Well, after I went back and searched this forum and used lots of the tech folder posts (thanks bismic, fordexpyguy, etc), i decided to take it down to Mike, here in San Pedro at Advanced Diesel. Pretty small town in big LA and several local neighbors recommended him.
He did the diagnostics for free, unlike many other's out there that charge you, and then apply to the repair.
He was sure the turbo was sticking so he pulled it apart. I asked him to call me when pulled out so I could view the issues myself, knowing after seeing all the FTE pictures and You Tube video's, etc.

Here the pictures I took.

You can see the vanes pretty sooted up. In trying to pivot them, there was enough friction to require a good cleaning

The assembly with the unison ring removed. Some pitting here but it looks like it will clean up okay.

The unison ring looked pretty good still, even though it was frozen in position. Mike had to carefully pry it off the base, locked solid, but still looked re-useable. No cracks at the base of the vane slots fortunately.

Here's the ring by itself, note the oval hole still looks in pretty good shape where the solenoid actuator mounts.

After reading up on this topic some time back, I have made it a point to drive it hard regularly, ensuring those vanes and ring move freely. Well, I guess that didn't work. It lasted about 80k before now and hopefully will go another 80k before another P0299 post.

Any coincidence?

I started the truck this morning here, not that it's cold but just about as cool as it's been since spring.

No ROMPS?

Only when first starting would I get the Romps consistently on cool mornings.
Today, no such symptoms.

Maybe the unison wheel has been stuck longer than I thought?
Also, the hum or vibration I was getting at idle is gone too. A sign I'll listen for in the future.
Hard to believe I got back from a 7k trip and possibly had the issue the whole time?

Now, After driving with full throttle, I can tell I have less performance at top end.
Mike had warned me that the vanes had been stuck open and was getting too much boost at wot.

I'll be pulling the 5th wheel next week to get new tires and will update my performance.

Do you know where you are with the software updates? Do you know if the shop has the Ford software to do the updates?

If you didn't already have the latest update, you might lose 1 or 2# of boost at WOT if the shop updated you. I think I lost about 1#, and you can probably feel that loss of power when pulling. A dead giveaway for me that a truck has the latest update is that you can hear the computer exercising the vanes, most often shortly after starting while sitting at the first stop light. Not everyone likes the latest version, but overall I'm glad I did it.

I like it and haven't noticed any adverse effects to include a loss of mpg's.

Thx Bill, I'll ck it out this morning.

I did run the same test on my Dashboss before and after. I went from 26#'s of turbo boost before to only 23#'s now.

It feels like I'm pulling a small trailer now compared to before so I have a feeling no software upgrade.

As happy as I am to have it working properly, I'm surprised at the difference in power.

Yeah, that's too low. You should get a good 26#. I see 27-28#. It would do 29# before the update. Of course you only see those numbers when you're pulling hard. I can't get those, even with WOT, unless I'm pulling a load or a long grade. Mostly pulling, because there aren't any grades that really tax an empty truck.

Bill,
I went back to Mike at Adv Diesel and he checked on the software update.
His guys had not done it with the turbo cleaning so he grabbed his computer and added 3 updates. There was one for high elevation/freezing climates that he said wasn't necessary.
The other 3 were ECU, FICM, and tranny updates.
I'm back to 25#'s of boost.
20 minutes later and good to go.
Thx for the alert.
