I have duty tonight because of the tropical storm and I was bored sitting at home watching the wind blow, so I went to Auto Zone and bought an air filter for my 09 F-150. I wanted to compare the Fram to the K&N I have in the truck. The filter was $19.99 plus tax. I measured the filter and calculated that the Fram has about 2913 sq. inches of filter media. The K&N has 72 sq. inches. The K&N was $32 new, plus the cleaning and oiling kit. I guess maybe the oil makes up for the difference in sq. area, but not 40.5 times the difference. I've also heard that you'll get better gas mileage with a paper filter as opposed to the oiled one, but only a little.
I put the Fram filter in to see if it makes any difference. I'll let ya'll know.
Really, the FRAM will have a finer filter media than you typically get with a K&N. The only time a K&N approaches the filtering capabilities of a paper media filter is when they are chalked full of dust/dirt. This creates a finer mesh and helps filter things out. This is why K&N literature notes that just because the filter looks dirty, it isn't time to clean yet. They encourage you to leave a layer of dust on your filter. You may also see a difference, depending where you are in the country. You should look at your intake piping and give it a good wipe-down with a clean paper towel. Take note of how much dust you see in the intake. Then after you've had the FRAM for a while, see if you notice a difference. I did in my 98 Dodge neon I owned as a kid. I never bought K&N after that car.

Is the K&N filter not pleated? I've never seen one like that.

Yes, the K&N filter is pleated. Both are about 9 1/4" square. K&N is about 3/4" thick with 32 pleats. The Fram is 2 1/4" thick with 72 pleats. (I think those are the numbers. It was a long night last night.)
