tranny swap

i have a 1987 f250 4x4 460 cid 4spd. I am looking into swaping out the 4spd for a 5 speed and was wondering what easy options i might have.

The only 5 speed to consider is a ZF. The M5OD is too light duty.

i wonder if its direct replacement or if there are clutch transfer case issues to deal with as well,

The transfer case will bolt onto any 4wd transmission. As for the clutch you may need a different pressure plate, the input shaft may have different splines.
