I have an 83 2.8L v6 ranger that i just replaced the intake manifoild on, which includes taking the distributor off and readjusting the timing. Now, when under load it pings (lo octane-sounding) with regular gas a ton and even some with premium and has less power than before.
The valves were also anjusted and sound ok, and the timing looks good with a light. ?????, it is getting good gas mielage, i dunno. Also...the idle control motor on the drivers side of the carb doesnt work right anymore and there is no vacume to the egr valve or the little vacume connection on the front of the carb. HELP!
Paul: I certainly agree with the vacuum leak scenario. Mix up some soapy water in a spray bottle and start checking. Go all the way around your intake manifold, base of the carburetor and anywhere else where there are vacuum lines. The soapy foam should disappear quickly where there is a leak (it will get sucked in). Also, double check all of your vacuum lines that they are indeed connected to the right place. There should be a decal under the hood with a diagram.
