88 4.9 mods

Hey guys considering making a few more changes to the 88 before driving her almost 1000 miles. The exhaust system is looking kind of rough so I am thinking about replacing her with a 2 1/2 inch system from the manifold back.

My question is will I have any issue if I remove the cat from the OBD1 engine. I don't have to worry about emissions since the vehicle is 25 years old now.

To save the debate and other posts... It is against federal law to tamper with emissions equipment ie. removing the cat, egr, all that fun stuff.

That said...

Technically you can remove the cat and the computer won't care. EEC iv o2 sensor is before the first cat.

I removed the rear one, due to holes.

There is no noticeable performance benefit.

I understand this. My reason for ditching it is due to the damage and condition of the current system. I am going to try to salvage the factory exhaust manifold. Every thing from the manifold back is going to need to be replaced.

You shouldn't have any issues at all. Not even a check engine light. It'll just be loud as heck. And you probably need a y-pipe to convert the two 2" pipes before the front cat to a single 2.5".

My usual recipe, which is cheap, good sounding, and pretty cool looking, is just get a thrush welded muffler from advance (flowmaster 40 copy) and pipe it Lightning style right in front of the passenger rear tire.

Oh and I just wanted to get the disclaimer out of the way before someone else chimes in and yells at me haha.

Lol thanks for the advice. I figured 2 1/2 and a flowmaster 70 series would sound pretty mild even if I did dump it in front of the tire.

I am assuming a 2 1/2 inch single is plenty of flow for the 300 correct?

Yup, if you look, 2.5 is about tops for single with 2.25 for duals.

So another fast question. Is a 2.5 single high flow cat worth the investment.

Thinking something like this. custom y pipe into 2.5 single high flow cat to a 70 series flow master or mild magnaflow.
