97' Gas Tank Replacement ...help
My 97' F150 4x4 Flareside auto / standard cab has a fuel tank that is starting to rust away. It has that wet look on the bottom and sides in places , and you can smell fuel.
How hard is it to replace the fuel tank? I see they are about $200 . Is it a straight forward job or do I cough up the bucks to save myself a headache??

You may not have to do the labor your self. I just received a recall letter from ford for my 97 f150 for the tank straps potentially rusting out. Maybe they could do both? I don't know what my wife did with the letter so I can't tell you recall number, but I bet your local ford dealer knows what it is...

Not a tough job; just use up most of the fuel before you take the tank down and have HELP to do it. A fire extinguisher is a dern good idea--an ABC at a minimum and someone on firewatch while you and another take it down. Do it outside if at all possible. Since your straps were just replaced the new ones should still be easy to remove. Hook a ground wire from the chassis to a good earth ground and another to the tank to earth and you should be OK. No nearby smoking or torch use, obviously....
