So with another deployment lurking in the very near future I am faced with a difficult discussion and could use some good advice. I am considering selling my 2007.5 CC/SB cummins 2500 dodge since it just going to be collecting dust and I am sick of payments. I have a buyer lined up who is ready to pull the trigger and I am sad to report I think I am going to let my baby go .
In light of this I would like to have a dependable truck before I leave and waiting on me when I get home and I think the Ford gods may have provided one.
My friend back homes brother has a 88 F150 XLT that they took off the road a few months ago to use on the farm. Its a 5 speed 4x4 truck with 170K on the clock. It also sports the legendary 300 inline six . Every thing on the truck seems to be strait and other then a normal tune up and power steering gear box seal looks like she is ready to be road ready. The tires are not the greatest but should pass inspection with no problems and rust is minimal.
It's worth whatever you'll pay. However, you'd have a very hard time finding a cheaper 4x4 than that in the area I live in. If it runs and drives well it sounds like a pretty good deal.
That's kind of what I was thinking. I am a fan of the 300 also and the fact that this one is EFI and a 5 speed kind of makes me feel a little better about it.
I figured I should give it a good tune up all the way around. Any recommendations on what I should look into to.
I figured
Plugs
Wires
Distributer cab
rotor button
air filter
oil
diff fluid (god knows when it was changed last)
I should also note that my other option is a one owner 95 Honda prelude that is in our family. It needs at a minimal a slave cylinder $20 or at most a clutch $160. I could get the Honda for $500 so I am stuck between a rock and a hard place here. Not really wanted to give up my cummins but I think its best for the family and our savings account.
The only mods I plan on doing are the following. Feel free to help me out guys if you think I am wrong or have advice.
Taylor or MSD distributor cap
8.8 or larger plug wires MSD or taylor made
Good drop in air filter (probally not K&N)
Decent plugs. double platinum's auto lights or something of that nature.
Good oil change with good filter
Diff, transmission, and coolant change. (feel free to recommend fluid and type)
Down the road maybe header, high flow cat, and 2 1/2 inch pipes.
hard to see from pics, but like everyone has already said if it runs and drives its work 1k. that said, if its not pristine (I think its safe to assume that its not) then you'd better be ready to wrench on it. these trucks are awesome, very reliable, but like anything that's 25 years old it is probably going to need more-than-maintenance items before too long. the tune up and fluid change is a good place to start, but i'd be prepared for some overhauling, body work, etc.
Small oil pan leak (just typical dampness and light oil)
Valve cover leak (same as above)
rear pinion seal is leaking (the worst leak will need to be replaced)
Upper radiator hose needs to be replaced
Tires are ok but will need to be replaced before heavy snow.
And the kicker. 3.08 gears with open diffs.
I had planed to use this truck as my snow truck and for driving back and forth from NY to VA some times hauling and towing light loads 1500-4000lbs.

I would just throw in regular copper for plugs FYI. Everyone here with swear by them. Been down that path with E3's etc. other wise not a bad start.
Around 3000 would be the top of my budget. That would leave a little room for mods or repairs if it needed them.
3k is tough budget to work with, but you can find something to suit your needs better than that particular truck for 3k. You could find an f150 for a bit less than a 3/4 ton, and a 3/4 ton that's in decent shape could be had for 3k. I'd avoid automagic trans if reliability and simplicity is what youre after.
Aside from that, at 3k you are really just limited to "what's out there" for that price vs what parricularly you'd like. If you found a chevy 1500 5 spd that's been maintained well that's a good buy also. You could even find a rust free toyota close to that budget, I just wouldn't want to tow much with one as they barely get out of their own way empty.
Keep in mind I am keeping a little extra on the side in case something was to brake or if it needed a little extra work. While I don't need a 351 with 4.10 gears something in the middle would be nice.
