Recently replaced the upper/lower intake manifold gaskets to repair oil leak (this was big job for me...only done oil changes and brakes prior to this). Removed the distributor at the same time. Now the timing is off. How do I set the timing? I have the Chilton manual and know how to use it, but can someone put this process in concise terms I can understand???
Remove the number one spark plug.
Turn the engine over by hand(breaker bar and socket on crankshaft bolt)
Put your finger over the number 1 spark plug hole. When you feel a rush of air coming up stop.
Look at the timing marks on the crank. Now line up the pointer with zero on the scale.
Install distributor with rotor pointing at the number 1 terminal(make a mark on the base with the cap off)
Tighten down the dist bolt.
This will get you close, but you will need to check it with a timing light.BE SURE AND REMOVE THE SPOUT CONNECTOR BEFORE SETTING THE TIMING.The chiltons should show you the location.
Chilton's never exactly showed me mine. I found it by accident. It is the grey connector sittin atop the brake booster in this picture.
Hope this helps you.
The reason I want to see it is that the connector you showed is in the windshield wiper harness, and its wires are NOT colored to be the SPOUT. I don't know what it is, but I think you'll see the actual SPOUT near the ignition module taped into the harness. Its wires are both pink, and there are none on the removable side.
In your first pic (of those 2), the SPOUT connector is the gray plastic box in the black connector at the lower R corner of the pic. The TFI is also in that pic. The second one shows the coil connector.
Boy do I feel stupid. I heard that the SPOUT was on the drivers side firewall and it was a grey connector. Guess I heard wrong. Thank you Steve for correcting my mistake. I owe you one.

It's always about that far from the TFI module. In '92, the TFI moved off the distributor (as Jr.'s is) onto the L inner fender (like yours), and the SPOUT naturally followed it.
