Roof Rack Cross Rail Swap for 2004-2006 Expedition
If your 2004-2006 Expedition has the roof rack with the raised side rails but the cross rails have disappeared or whatever, I found a cheap substitute.
On a whim I went searching the local Pick-a-Part today. They didn't have much for Expeditions, the newest being a 2000, which has a completely different roof rack. Anyway, to make a long story short I found a Chevy Blazer and a Montana minivan (don't recall what years) with 38" cross rails, same as my 2006 Expedition, with raised side rails and a similar mounting system. Had to trim the side pieces down a little to just over 1/2 inch wide, but they slid right in.
I paid $12.95 for two cross rails including tax and the $2 fee to enter the scrap yard. Sure beats the +/- $100 for a new pair off EBay.

Yeah I just replaced mine with a set of Yakima roof racks. The cross bars are easily removed when not in use. Makes for a much cleaner roofline and no wind noise. Sometimes I haul a canoe up on the roof of the Expod and the Yakima rack has a nice canoe cradle setup. The crossbar mounts are quick release and just stored in the garage when not needed.
