Dieseling/After-Running

I have a '94 Explorer and a '92 Ranger. Since they share the same engine and drivetrain (4.0/Auto/4WD), I thought that I'd ask the folks on this board for some advice. The Ranger has started to diesel/after-run. There is no pattern and I don't think that it is related to engine heat because it has even happened after the truck sat for 2 hours and was started only long enough to pull it into the driveway. It usually takes a few "starts" with the key to get it to stop. Any advice as to cause and/or cure would be greatly appreciated.

I'd check to see if there are any codes stored first. A word of caution on higher octane gas; Ford put out a TSB some time ago concerning knock/ping in 4.0L engines for Rangers/Explorers/Aerostars of all model years up to and including 2000. They advise using 87 octane as "higher octane may increase the likelyhood of carbon buildup resulting in pinging".
