My truck has started making a whining/scraping/screaching sound in what I believe to be only 1st and 2nd gear. It may be all gears, but I can only audibly hear it in 1st and 2nd. This may because road noise/wind, etc becomes too loud in the higher gears.
It's a 96, Mazda trans, 101k miles.
I've thought I had it narrowed down to the transmission because the sound only occurs when under throttle. If the truck is in neutral and I rev it, all I hear is the engine; no bad noise. Also, can't be the diff or I'd hear it all the time.
I didn't think it would be the driveshaft because it is always turning, no matter what.
But my buddy says that when under throttle different parts of the ujoints are in contact with metal, so it COULD be them and not necessarily the transmission, like I suspect.
Trans seems fine...not really rough at all so I'd prefer it NOT be the trans that needs work.
So...would u-joints do this? And if so, what do they cost to replace?
do you hear a clunk when you put it into gear/reverse? that's usually a good indication the u-joints are shot. u-joints are cheap to buy. get the ones with the grease nipple. they are a bit tricky to put in if you haven't done them before but you can do it yourself. if you can't hear it in higher gears maybe you can lift the rear axle off the ground and run through the gears that way (no wind noise). could be a wheel bearing too maybe?
any other clues/symptoms you can tell us about?
hope that helps a little.
rusty.
I'd go with the u-joints first. Mine made some really weird whining noises before I figured out it was them. They didn't clunk though, and they were tight in the truck. What happened was that they were the original ones and the grease had dries up inside of them.
Yea, i would try the u-joints first I thought I was loosing a trany in mine because I even got under it and checked to see if they were loose and they seemed perfactly fine, it didn't bang when shifting like the typical u-joint problems, I just had a teririble howling and grinding noise when accelerationg mostly. found out that the u-joints were frozen inside I couldn't even move them with my hand when i took the drive line out.
Try u-joints first.
good luck
