Power steering seals leaking

I put a new set of seals into my 85 f 150 last year and they are leaking again any ideas about why they wore out so fast??? Also does anyone know how many times them seals can be changed befor i need to replace the gear box?? When i changed them the first time i completely pulled the gear box and changed the seals. Also which is better to use in it, power steering fluid or atf??
Thanks Ben

Could be several things, 85. Sounds like to me the box maybe bad, been under alot of stress a time or two. Would check that first. Get the dimensions from an auto shop that has the book and see if it's egg-shaped. It should not have gone out that fast.

Power steering fluid - high grade is better than ATF - especially if your mudding alot in deep ruts - lubes better.

You can make the steering column fit with a few homemade brackets - helped a friend put one off of an LTD into a '54 Ford Pickup - but it would mean alot of work and rewiring. Then you would also have to make an adapter (also homemade) for the connector to your box.
As far as the steering box goes, it would be better if you got one out of the junk yard to fit your truck (all the F-series that model will work) and BTW while you're out there see if they have a steering column for an XLT with tilt steering instead of using the Crown Vic.

The wife wants the tilt wheel outa her old car into her other one which is what i was asking about is to switch it from a 84 ltd to a 83 ltd. The 84 has tilt and the 83 doesnt. the 84 is a donor car which is why i was asking. does you know if i can take it out of the 84 crown vic and put it into the 83 with out haveing to make brackets and stufff??
Thanks, Ben

Sorry about that, a little brain dead today. Can't help you on the cars, but I will plant that seed around the office here and see what comes up.
