390 FE Muffler Choice

Hey guys,

I am going to do the exhaust and headers on my F100 with the 390. I was looking for some advice on what muffler to go with. I am looking for a nice strong tone but nothing too loud. That being said, what is the point of having a 390 if no one knows. Does anyone have experience with Flow-tech headers?

Thanks

Tim

Tim, these old trucks are loud enough in the cab as is. I have reached the age that quieter is better. I chose a good flowing "turbo" set and used long 3" tips out under the rear bumper. Those make the bad azz tone. Have you noticed the oil can extensions on the ricers?

I have Flowmaster 40 series 2 chambers on my 428cj and they are very nice. Doesn't get too loud till you nail it.

I have the flow-tech headers on my 390 with an X pipe and summit brand 2 chamber "flowmasters " 2.5" pipe comes out right before rear wheels . It has a nice idle sound and gets loud as hell when i step on the go pedal . It does have a drone about 1100 rpm , but she doesn't stay there for long ..

none just straight pipes lol its not that loud if you do it right but then again im using 2-3/8'' oilfield pipe with my 3" race headers 1-7/8" primary's and it doesn't get loud till after 2500-3000 rpm range going through town no one has to hear you unless you want them to lol

i installed patriot ceramic coated headers and i didnt have to modify any linkages to get them to fit, they are cheap and have thick flanges so they seal up tight. 2.5 inch collectors probably help with the fitment and are a better size for a street motor thats not turning a bunch of revs.

i run 2.5 inch pipe all the way back with an exhaust crossover that runs over the tailshaft. cant see any pipes from the side of the truck. 2.5 inch Porter steelpack mufflers. very classic sound with a bark above 3000-3500. they are pricey mufflers but have a vintage sound that is not too modern like a lot of mufflers people run on old cars/trucks.

after a few minutes i can touch the primary tubes of my headers with my bare hands, get the ceramic helps a whole bunch with the heat under the hood. and dont cheap out on the headers, youll be sorry you did later.

Talking Mufflers

I have been useing Jones Full Boar mufflers and Thrush glasspacks, the Jones have a nice mellow tone till you step on it , sounds great and no drone at cruise speed. I like to use the longest Thrush that will fit , nice rumble and 60's sound. I try to use a H or X pipe in the systems that we build here.
The Jones mufflers are stainless steel and come in several different types, they have turbo , baffelled , straight thru designs. It all depends what the customer wants.

Has anyone had any experience putting Spintech mufflers of the FE motor? We want something that has a good rumble to it. Thanks for those pics!
