89 f150 help please!

Hey guys Iv got an 89 f150 5.0 4x4 and Iv been having some problems lately I cant figure out! For about a month now my truck will run perfectly fine 90% of the time and then sometimes I'll shut it off and it just won't crank back up, I have plenty of battery power and it's getting fuel I just replaced the starter but it still won't crank. The weird thing is as soon as I would hook jumper cables up to it it would fire right up, even though the battery wasn't close to dead. These problems lasted on and off for about a month. And now last night my truck did it again but this time my fuel pUmp was not workin so after about 10 mins I tried it again and my fuel pump was working again but still wouldn't crank even with the jose cables hooked up. Shortly after fiddleing around I discovered the wire running from my battery to my amp had been melted and shorting out bad. I unplugged the wire and after about 20 more mins of fiddleing it decided to crank and ran done all the way home. Well this morning the same thing happens, fuel pump not working for 10 tries or so then it kicked on but still wouldnt crank.. I'm more than lost but I'm pretty sure that amp wire was the start of my problems... Anybody have a clue what my problem could be??
