Coolant Filter?

Hey guys! I was reading up in Diesel Power Magazine about different ways to make your diesel last forever (worth reading! Google it!) Anyways, they basically said 2 things: no cold starts and filter everything. Simple enough! I looked up some coolant filters and I didn't see a kit for our 7.3s, which is fine because Id rather do my own! I read an article where a guy put one on his 7.3L but it was a tiny hose! Prolly 3/8. If Im going to filter my coolant, I want 100% of the coolant flowing through the filter, not a dab at a time. The perfect location would be somewhere near where the heater hoses go through the firewall. Simple!

Any ideas? Any suggestions? Any pics?

I think Diselsite makes a kit for our trucks. I think its a bypass. Which is ok because if it ever clogged it wouldn't do any harm to the system, just no filtering, which is what you want.

Its on my list of things to do. Which keeps getting longer and longer the more I hang around here.

I'll see if I can find a link.

That's very similar to the one I saw homemade. I didn't think about the whole "getting clogged and stopping the system". I was wanting to make mine so 100% of the coolant flow goes through the filter but that wouldn't be the greatest idea lol

Thanks for the link!

There's a thread on here if you search where folks take a NAPA bypass filter set up and simply tap into the heater hoses. The write I read was about $40 all in and took about an hour. The water pump I just put on has the built in bypass filter and there are several write ups on here for that. Simple job, about 4 hours to do if you are slow like me and about $250 all in with new fluids too.

and to go along with that, just like the idi engines, your psd's still require standard green (but low silicate) coolant and so you must use SCA's.
with the napa filter head, you can run a coolant filter that monitors and releases these sca's to the system (without overcharging) automatically for you,so you won't even need to frig with test strips nor adding liquid SCA's anymore so you'll have a cooling system as issue free/easy to maintain as the later diesel engines that are designed to run ELC as well as keeping the system clean.pretty slick.check into it.
penray NF2088 (i buy mine off ebay.cheapest place iv found 'em so far) screws onto the 4019 napa filter head.

I think the 2091 is the one you need. That's the one I use on my IH pump. 8 gal and under. Penray are nice filters.

I tapped mine into the heater lines as well. You dont want 100% flow through the filter, as it would restrict coolant and they get filled FAST, especially the first few. Im on my 3rd filter within 15k miles and they have all been disgustingly filled with sand, silicate, and god knows what else. After seeing what the filters caught, i wouldnt run my truck without a filter setup.

No problem! I unplug my factory block warmer and also unplug my device that warms and circulates the coolant. Nifty stuff! Made by Hotstart but I'm sure theyres others.

Imagine hopping in your truck in that 40 degree weather, flip the heater on high and it blows HOT!

Move to AZ for the winter! Even with the heater plugged in, its still a cold start. If you try to avoid cold starts then you will never use your pickup. I guess that will prolong the life of the truck! LOL

I was thinking the same thing! doesn't help on costs, though - which i'd think is the real end-goal of making a truck last forever - you'll need another truck to drive since your diesel truck is sitting cold, never allowed to start! :-)
