A/C only works sometimes
I have a 1990 Ford F-150 4X4 with a 300 6cyl. The air conditioner only works every other day and when it does it's very cold and works great. I think the trouble is the compresser clutch is not kicking in.

You could be quite correct. Have you tried this: On a hot day set the air to full max! Open the hood and see if the compressor is actually turning and by that I mean the whole clutch and not just the belt. That way you will know. If it is not then you have to check other things like low freon or a wiring problem. (corrosion)etc.

yeah, if you are low on freon it will trip the clutch shut off switch and the compressor clutch won't cycle. This can be intermittant if you are right on the borderline, some days it works, other days it doesn't. Also if the freon is low it will often cause the air to be cooler than usual.
If your truck has never had a recharge, it may be getting low. With that many years on it, it may have a small leak.
