Question Broken Shift indicator

Hello,
I put this in the the Trans section, but I thought I would put it here also. Please move it if need be. I am new here and want to get it right. Thanks.

I just traded for a 1995 F150 and the Shift Indicator in the dash is broken. Has any one else had this problem? If so any insight into what it will take to fix it? I have worked on Mustangs and Tbirds most of my life so I have never faced the in dash indicator. Thanks for the help. Tbird46

Broken Shift indicator

I'm not sure if your '95 is like my '91 but I recently replaced the steering column in my truck. On mine there is a collar that goes around the steering column where it goes into the dash. It's in two parts and can be removed by taking out the two screws under the steering column. I took the collar off and I could see a real small cable that was attached to a post on the shifting mechanism. The other end of the cable went to the indicator needle. The cable can be adjusted by loosening a screw and moving the cable mounting bracket.

The cable might be broke. It's not too hard to take it apart to see.

Lightbulb Broken Shift indicator

Bubba Shrimp,

Thanks, that tells me what to look for. I will try to fix it this weekend if it will ever stop raining. I hope it just needs adjusting, but if not you have told me what to look for. Thanks again. Like I said this is a great forum, supported by great people. Now where is that screw driver?

Thanks again,

This site shows how to pull the cluster, and it should show that cable.

Talking Broken Shift indicator

Steve83,

Thanks a lot. It really helps to see what I am looking for. That is a great site. Between you and Bubba Shrimp I think my problem is solved. Like I said this is a great site. I have only been a member for about two days and already you have solved my problem. Now can you do any thing about my expanding waist line?....Just thought I would ask. Thanks for all the help.

Broken Shift indicator

Hi,

Do you know where I can buy the shift indicator cable? My 1980 F100 suffers from a broken cable.

Use some 10-20# monofiliment fishing line. Tie off one end to the spring on the indicator and make a loop in the other end to catch the small tab on the column, You might have to fiddle with the length a bit.

Did this on a couple of Chubbies back in the 80's works well.
