1981 F-350 C6

My tranny died. What years and engine C6 will fit my 81 F-350 2wd 4.9 litre? I know it has to be from a 2wd. I think a 302 and maybe a 351 will work. I do have a 4wd C6, but was told changing the output shaft is a big job. How hard is that to do? I have worked on vehicles a bit, but have never been inside an automatic yet. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

To change the output shaft take EVERYTHING out of the transmission. Start rebuilding it by installing the 4x2 output shaft.

The 300, 302, and 351W all had the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

Thanks! it sounds like the rebuild is more than I want to try right now (I also no have no place inside to do the work).

Will a C6 from any year work. I think I heard the ones from the 1970's were different. If so, what years will work. Will a tranny from a car work, or are they different? Thank you!

I don't know which other C6s will work. My knowledge of C6s is very limited.

Generally any small block style will work from late 70's up. Keep in mind extension housing length, is yours bolt on yoke or slip yoke as those are different lengths. Also manual levers are different from cars and trucks as well. Those can be changed without too much trouble. Not a bad tranny to learn how to start rebuilding, very basic, and parts are cheap. Good luck!

Pay attention to the speedo drive. Count teeth and match with what is in yours now. Provided the speedo was correct.
Trucks have less teeth than cars and will never be accurate even with driven gear changes.
