I have a quick question that I hope someone can help me with.
Yesterday we bought a '93 Ford F150 XLT 2 wheel drive, short bed with dual tanks; good truck except in all of our inspecting and checking it out at the dealer we missed one thing. When you go to switch to the front gas tank it backfires and will hardly run. The gas cap was missing on the tank and we thought maybe there was water in it but after water removal treatment and a full tank of gas the problem is the same.
It seems that we should start with the fuel filter does that sound right? or is it possibly the pump or something else. Also what is the best way to deal with the full tank problem, I read somewhere that you can put the front end higher than the tank??
Any help would be greatly appreciated... husband has a broken leg and back and isn't the most patient mechanic so I will probably have to help.
Thanks in advance
If the pumps are working, fuel will NEVER transfer from one tank to the other thru the fuel system. The filter serves both pumps, so it's not likely that it's the problem. I'd look for a short inside the tank select switch, or a weak front fuel pump. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the port on the fuel rail. This site shows where it is.
Thanks for the reply. We are not real sure about this truck now. Let me ask another question on a different subject.
Is it legal for a car dealer to sell a used vehicle that is required to pass emissions testing without a catalytic converter (sp.) if the county it is sold in is required to pass emissions?
This is our latest finding on the truck we bought... very disappointing.
my rear fuel pump went out on my 93 F-150 and no, it doesnt just stop working altogether. It was intermittant. For instance, it might not crank up on that tank, but after driving 5 minutes it would work again and then cut out 10 minutes later. But after replacing it the fuel is delivered perfectly now. It's not a terribly big job anyhow. I have never taken off the front tank but i would suggest driving it all you can on that tank until it is empty so it wont be too heavy. Then you just pull it out, take out the pump, put in a new one, and do a little soldering and it should work fine.
Thanks Red...
According to my husband it won't hardly run off of it so we aren't sure how we'll run the gas out. I'm gonna suggest he keep trying it and hopefully it will catch every once in a while.
Thanks for all the help.
