1962 shifting problems
I've just purchased a 62 f100 step side and am new to this forum, I'll try posting some pictures this week... I've always had a classic ford and still do have a 65 falcon which I am currently restoring.
I found this forum whilst trying to solve my shifting issue. when I try to shift either in 1st or reverse it wants to grind the gears. at first there was no issue with either, then first started to grind and now reverse. I've adjusted the clutch and it seems to be working properly, she shifts into 2nd adn third very well and feels strong... I did notice that when i push in the clutch and coast while still in first it sounds like it's still partially engaged (making a whirling type of noise?). though it doesn't seem to have the issue all the time it does happen most of the time. to cut down on the grinding i've found that shifting into gear very slowly helps quite a bit. while researching it sounds like i need a new synchronizer ring but i wanted to be sure before i started pulling the tranny or anything
please let me know what you guys think
thanks

As it should, as it's a 1962. The only way to downshift into 1st without grinding, is by double clutching.
1963: First year for Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all (1st/2nd/3rd) syncromesh manual transmission in F100/250's & misc Passenger Cars.
1962 and earlier have a non syncro (crash) 1st gear as do 1961/67 144/170/200 I-6 Passenger Cars with 2.77 trans (if your '65 Falcon is an I-6, it has the 2.77 trans, if a 289, the 3.03 trans).

At the bottom of the steering column underneath the hood are the two manual control selector levers that the shift rods from the trans attach to.
In each one of these levers is a bushing and insulator. The bushings wear, the shift lever binds up.

appreciate the help!
the whirling/whining noise when i push the clutch in first... would this be caused by the worn out bushings as well?
Original collar came with a zerk (grease) fitting, but in 1963, Ford introduced "Lifetime Lubrication" removed the zerk fitting, installed a rubber plug in its place.
Replacement parts thereafter came with rubber plugs. The same scenario also applies to zerk fittings in spindles, tie rod and tie rods ends, draglink and u-joints.
'Course, this Lifetime Lubrication wheeze was really FoMoCo's method of selling more parts, as the warranty period back then was 2 years/24,000 miles, whichever occurred first.
After the warranty period expired, the grease began to dry out, parts soon wore out. Some Ford dealer and gas station lube techs, private owners removed the plugs, installed zerk fittings.
