just have a wuick question. when i lifted my truck it came with a stabalizer shock so it went on. could anyone explain to me how exactly it helps with handling? ive had it on for a few years now but its time to replace it and trying to figure out if its even worth replacing
It's not really intended to help handling. It's main purpose is to stop the steering wheel from whipping around when you hit a rock, or some other object, with the front tires. It can help with wandering a little bit too. I would suggest taking it off and driving it around a while without it, and see what you think.
my $.02 on stabilizers.... i have one... cept it's in a box on my workbench.... i've always been told that stabilizers basically "mask" problems that may otherwise not show themselves.... especially when you start adding multiple ones. I've had my truck lifted for about 4 years now, and still haven't gotten around to putting it on yet, by this point, i probably won't ever get around to it.
this theory may not hold water, but at least thats what ive been told in the past
theres a reason for everying that someone makes out there, i just havent found them all yet
You are correct in that often times people are having steering slop or other problems and put on a stabalizer, which helps feedback, but does nothing to correct the real problem. However, as Ryan mentioned, they do serve a real purpose in soaking up hard hits that your steering takes on or off road. They can also soak up some of these hard hits from being transmitted to your box and other parts...cheap insurance against breakage. If you are having problems then throwing on a stabalizer may seem to help, but its not addressing the real problem. But I always run a stabalizer on any truck that sees any off-road duty as they serve a very real and important purpose.
