Driveline "clunk" or 'thud" problem

Just for the record: I did the slip yoke lubrication service tonight, and it solved my clunking problem ...it was clunking right when I came to a stop and right when I accelerated away from a stop.

Drives nice and smooth now.

Thanks,

Driveline "clunk" or 'thud" problem

you can buy the grease gun pin to do the boot on the drive shaft ..it a needel that pokes right in there .i treid it and works well. all so even if your ujoints look good and dont seem to have play .If the rear one is not a good ujoint they can go on you from 4weeling .I bought all new ones for mine from auto zone .they were called brute force high proformance ujoints .They were 13.00 each and the rear takes 3 . I changed them and my tranny mount witch was 19.99 at auto zone and i have a much smother ride. I was getting a small vibration from the rear and a small clonk when i put it in reverce. So i sprung for the cash and now i know im good to go on them ..

so you just stick the needle through the rubber boot? and why do you have to take the driveshaft down? They are all talking about having to take it off. I climbed under there tonight and it doesnt seem like it would have to come down to grease it up.

what am I missing here?

How do you all deal with the small metal straps on the rubber boot as far as replacement? If you pierce the boot with the needle on the grease gun pin, (not removing the metal straps),won't it enlarge over time and throw out the grease. Trying to avoid having a shop doing it. Any further help is appreciated.

I just used a pair of needlenose pliers to remove and reinstall the metal straps (no zip ties handy!) when I did my front. Sounds like its time to yeild to peer pressure and do the rear too!!!

For preventive maintenance I just poked a tiny hole in the rubber and pumped oil in there from a squirt oil can, works for me, no clunking. Iil moves better than grease. I shoot a few squirts in there every six months or so. My friends drive shaft rusted right off under his rubber boot and snapped off, that’s what gave me the idea. Oil is good, shoot it in your tail gate too, save it from rusting out on the bottom.

How big is the hole? The oil wont just sling out due to centrifugal force? Just wondering. I also had the same clunking sound on stops and starts. Another post I read on the subject suggested checking pinion nut torque. Mine only had about 20 ftlbs. I tightened to 150, as high as my torque wrench went spec calls for 160. This fixed the clunk but now I hear a slight whine from the rear of the rear of the truck. But I'll start a new tread on that.
