LSD Swap??
Sorry for the repost from the 7.3 Forum, but some here may have some insight...
I have a 99 SD 250 4x4 7.3L. My dad is considering buying a 2003 7.3 L SD 250. He is really hung up on getting a LSD, but no trucks on the lots have the LSD, and the trucks MUST be on the dealers' lots to qualify for that fat rebate.
The question is.... I know that others have successfully swapped to LSD in their diffs. How hard is that, how detailed is it? Is it just a matter of swapping the ring gear and the pinion gear? If so, what size should we look for in the junkyard, and how to identify which trucks have it.

LSD Swap??
As a factory option, LSD is really cheap. Expect to pay $500 or more for an aftermarket unit to be installed. I would definitely NOT install a used differential in a new truck (warranty issues). BTW, the differential is seperate from the ring and pinion.
Best I can tell, the FORD rebates are not restricted to dealer stock. However, your local dealer may be running some special promotions. I'd have the dealer do a search and possible "dealer trade" to get your dad the truck that he wants equipped the way he wants it.
