Cam Position Sensor
I would have expected some of the regulars to have answered this one already but since no one has helped you out, here I go:
If you look at your crank pulley, the CPS is right beside it at the 10 o'clock position. It is the black plastic sensor held in place by a bracket that looks like what on a gasser would be a timing pointer. The pointer is held on by a 10mm bolt.
Many methods of getting the bolt out and some horror stories about stripping the bolt because it is too tight. I simply used a 10mm, 6-point, impact socket on a short extension, which placed the rachet in front of the crank pulley. You might have to turn the fan by hand to get a space between the blades for your rachet. International installs them pretty tight but using a good quality impact socket should do it for you, it did for me. I believe the horror stories of stripped bolts may be from using cheap or 12-point sockets on a small, tight bolt...
On a related note, I replaced mine just to have a spare in the glovebox. Mine had never "failed" or cut out, BUT... what an improvement the new one made. The engine runs so much smoother and revs throught the RPM range effortlessly. My engine felt like it was laboring above 2,400 PRM though it would pull and run above that RPM. Now it is smooth right through 3,000 and above. Cold start is smoother too. Your results obviously would depend on the condition of the old CPS (I am the second owner of this truck but it had 67k on it when I changed it. Based on how tight the bolt was, it could have been original).
Some say to disconnect the battery before changing it, that sure couldn't hurt... I didn't remember to.
As other post have indicated, it is much cheaper through an International dealer than through Ford.
Good luck, and I hope you get the same or better improvement that I did!
TC
