Ok...this is gonna b long..I'm helping a fella at work on his newly aquired(at my recommendation) 97 250.
It won't charge. The po had installed two alternators and still no charging.
We found the power all the time wire had no voltage.traced down a broken wire, replaced the wire...no charge..found the green ign wire to only have 3v...I have the cluster out and the red/green cluster supply is ok but green/red from indicator only puts out the 3v. So I put a jumper across the resistor and the light went out and system voltage at alternator green/red wire...now...uguessed it..no charging.so....
A) the resistor is not open and indicator light is working so...I'm a bit stumped
B) I think we have yet another bad alternator??!!??
I'm just so frustrated...this is not that hard...I'm beating my head against a wall...somebody stop me...
It wouldn't be so bad but Friday is my last day at this job . I want to get his truck going because he just bought it and can't drive it yet. I need to get my junk packed up so time is not on my side.
Something like this would be hard for me to help you on without actually being there going through it with you. I can't picture the circuit in y mind. Besides, you prolly know more about it than I do anyway!
I had/have this same exact problem with mine... Long story short, until I get mine back up here to me, what i did in the mean time to get the darn thing running, was ran a jumper wire from the "I" port of the connector to the alternator to the battery. Now you can throw a switch in, because you do need to shut the power off to the resistor on the alternator when you turn the engine off, or it will cook it.
There was a guy on here that was awesome in helping me work through this problem, "Pleggia" (Ian), which I am not sure if he is still around, but that guy knew his stuff and helped me out a lot when it came to these electrical gremlins!
