asked this on 12/23/'11 and i'm still puzzled.... every thing says E-150..went shopping for tires and people seem puzzled with what they see as far as suspension,, lug pattern and tire requirements ( 10 ply ), they say everything looks like a E-250 or bigger...the GVW states 8600....is this some sort of a towing package offered by the factory ?? It is a 2008 ...........(.E -199)maybe ???
that explains the lug configuration....but why the recommendation for such heavy duty tires.......i owned 2 other e-150 and they took plain old car tires.
The year of your E150 should tell any competent tire dealer what minimum rating tire your chassis needs. If you're not exceeding its GVWR then a 6-ply LT tire should be more than enough for normal use. I myself use Michelins LTX (load rated E) on several E250's, same 8600# max GVWR, running as a daily driver @7800#
Yes once upon a time we didn't give much consideration to tire types but hopefully we've moved past that age of darkness and run what's safe not just what fits or is cheapest.
Once upon a time, Sam's Club had the best tire prices, even beat the big mail order tire sellers.
Then they stopped having the best prices & merely had the advantages of being close, quick & offered open tire racks, where you could handle & compare a decent variety of tires at your leisure.
Then they adopted a policy that dictated only the vehicle manufacturer's specified size tire would be installed in their shop. If you wanted oversize tires, you'd need to jack your vehicle up at home, take wheels off & bring to Sam for tire mounting.
Was told it was about liability. Tire dealers apparently can be sued if they install tires that don't meet "minimum rating" & there's a tire related accident. This would include mounting standard P rated tires on '92 & up E150.
I believe the 8 lug E150's replaced the 5 lug in '07. I also have an '08 E150. I like the fact it resembles an E250 chassis in a passenger config. And please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't vehicles over 8500 gvw exempt from CAFE standards? I know they no longer report MPG stats on the window sticker.
Yup, the '08 and newer 150's are really 250 "lites". I believe Ford did this because the 5-lug E150's, when converted with raised roofs and fancy seating etc., ended up with a payload under 1000 lbs, and got overloaded chronically and regularly.
They needed more brakes, etc, and adding this kind of weight would have put them out of the P rated tires, so they ended up using the 150 label as a "low price point" leader. And the 8600 lb GVW got them out of the CAFE mileage standards.
The harder ride, etc, make them less successful as "car like" van conversions, but that market has almost disappeared anyway.

your explanation makes sense and answers my question....
