Hey Guys!
I need your opinion on something. Yesterday I picked my '05 6.0 from the shop after have the head gasket/stud job. In the process of the repair I also replaced my radiator hoses and water pump. Not ten miles down the road the lower hose came off and emptied the contents of the radiator. They acknowledged that but say that the water pump I supplied was leaking and defective. Since I supplied the NEW not rebuilt pump the repair is on me. I spoke to someone at Gates, the mfg of the pump and he says that the pump running dry is the most likely cause of failure. Do you agree?
Not sure what the water pump has to do with the lower hose coming off. If the shop didn't put one on or at least tightened it, they have to be liable for this. The water pump shouldn't have anything to do with the hose coming off.
Am I missing something here?
^^^^^^^^^^ X2 -- the pump didn't cause the lower hose to come off but them not tightening down the hose sure could cause a pump issue. But I'm worried what else cooked with no coolant?
Your shop sounds shady -- they must know they messed up....
I don't care for lawyers but I think I'd at least be interested in a free consultation and go from there. A trashed water pump isn't going to pop a properly anchored water hose. The degas cap pops at 16 psi. Long before a hose clamp should let go.
And if they knew the pump was indeed defective and leaking and they didn't inform you of that fact then they are, IMHO, liable regardless. And NO, the pump could NOT have caused the hose to come off. Their argument would never stand up in court.
Well, the owner of the shop is convinced that the water pump I supplied was defective. I also supplied new motorcraft hoses that had the spring clamp glued to the hose. He says that the pump was leaking and the coolant loss caused the temp to rise, which it did, gradually, until the pressure caused the hose to blow off. I didn't have a choice and had to pay the bill for the new pump. I am however filing a labor claim with gates. They will examine the pump and if defective will reimburse me for the labor and refund for the pump. If they say it was a failure due to running dry then I will have to go back to the shop. This guy has a great reputation and I want to trust him. I guess it's wait and see at this point. I just hope that with all the new stuff that I am done with repairs. The truck does run great with no issues, and with the tune is noticeably more powerful. I did head studs, egr delete, oil cooler, HPOP w/ new IPR, resurfaced heads, hoses, belt, SCT tuner, and yes....new water pump.
No way did the pressure cause the hose to blow off. Did you have coolant all around your degas bottle cap? It blows off at 16 psi. I've had more than one truck sitting in my driveway flushing the cooling system at operating temperature with the bottom radiator clamp not even on the hose and NEVER had one even leak, much less blow off, and that's running the RPM's up to the 2500 plus range. This shop owner is just trying to get off the hook for fixing his screw up.

Thanks for the feedback!
I would imagine a shop worth its salt would have test ran the truck up to full operating temp and then brought the truck back and checked for leaks on anything they had touched. Had the pump been leaking they would have known it then.

You have taken this guys "trusted" advise and he has you... hook, line, and sinker.
His nickname buffalo bill be cause he's buffalo'd you big time.
You ask for advise here, you get an overwhelmingly one sided opinion, and you trust old buffalo bill anyways.
Just don't get it.
I agree with all above. You got taken. Hope you stopped driving it and didn't hurt anything else. That's what the shop is worried about. Not the pump and coolant. If its not on your reseat, the pump wasn't leaking. They left the hose loose and didn't test the vehicle.
