I am looking at an 89 f-150 4x4 shortbox 302 5-speed on the back row at a local dealer. The waterpump is out (no big deal) but when you press on the clutch, the whole steering column, and the dash moves. And the column feels loose in the cab, my dad said somthing about an update plate that stiffens all of that up, is this a big deal to replace?? Or what exactly causes it? Thanks, Aaron

From my experience Ford sells 2 firewall reinforcement kits. The little kit costs $10 and supports only the clutch master cylinder. The bigger one costs $100 and supports the brake booster, the clutch master cylinder, and in general is for more serious repairs. If the steering column is moving it could be a broken/cracked pedal cluster reinforcement. Could be both problems.
As far as the work goes, it is sort of an uncomfortable place to work. You have to get a whole bunch of stuff out of the way before you do the repair.
