ABS controller

well, i was at lunch today at wendys, and as i was pulling out of the park lot i noticed my rear abs light was steady on as well as the parking brake light. so when i dropped off my mom who had joined my for lunch, i shut off everything in the truck, started it back up, and lo and behold, the lights are still one. go over to my mechanic, who says that the rear abs contoller is shot, and says that it'll be about $400 to replace, including labor. My question is, has anybody had this happen to them before? did you fix it yourself, and if you did, how hard is it to replace, cause i just barely have the funding to fix it. thanks in advance

Yep, I had the same thing happen to my '88 F-150. It's not too bad to change, one connector and 2 screws/bolts. It's located up under the dash, just to the right of the steering column. You can find those at the junkyard, and they will warranty them for 3 months or so. Probably much cheaper too.

ABS controller

Alright, i had my mechanic replace it(wanted him to fix some other stuff too), and it was fine for about two days. then last night both the parking brake and rear antilock lights came on. after i noticed that, i had to brake hard cause of some jerk in front of me, and they went off. start accelerating and bout 5 seconds later they come on again. another 10-15 secs and they turn off. so i park it over night, go back out there today, and the lights just wont go off. its like the trucks mission this week is to **** me off. whats going on with it? could the abs controller be out again? they entirly flushed the brake system and cleaned everything up. this is really ticking em off cause i dont know whether the abs is working or not? please help!!

Not ot sound stupid, it's your light that is on? If your 90 model is like my 92, the a ABS sensor is in the middle of your rear axle, if its going bad this will cause your light to stay on as well. It's about 20 dollars and held in by on screw. might try to replace it. first.

Actually, i took it back to the place that fixed it......turns out it was actually low brake fluid it was sensing. while they were in there, they noted i would need new rotors and pads, so that first on my list over my first long weekend off from college.

ABS controller

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jul-02 AT 10:57 AM (EST)]Almost hate to get you going, but it sounds like the first person who suggested the ABS controller did not check the basics (brake fluid level) and should be shot!! (looking to make some more money for the shop by simply replacing parts)..

FYI, there IS a procedure for pulling codes from the ABS system to let it give you some hints as to what might be wrong...

For future reference, there is some info on the web about pulling those codes, and what they mean...Do a google saearch for RABS

Its up to you, but I would be asking for some compensation for the shoddy troubleshoot, especially when all it needed was fluid....

When the put in the new abs controller, they flushed the brakes and didnt tighten a bleed screw down tight enough, which caused it to be low on fluid.
