I am having a hard time with my truck. Lately it has been hard to return the steering to center after a sharp turn. The steering kinds of floats for a second then you have to fight getting it back to center. . I hit a bear at 90km/55 mph on the highway lasty week. I was having problems before but the body shop replaced the steering damper shock. I thought it was fixed but I guess not. I have a set of 285/75/16 on it now. They are getting worn so I put the stock tires back on and try that. The truck has about a 100,000 km on it. Does anyone have any ideas stuck brake? ?
Have you had it to an alignment shop? after any front end damage, I get my stuff on a frame straightner weather it needs it or not. You may have a tow problem or maybe even a bad steering box.
I am going to get that checked out. It is a little hard to steering when stopped but the problem happens at highway speeds are when pulling off the highway. Tomorrow I will install the stock firestones and see if that fixes it. I will get the shop to check the ball joints. Would they be ball joints or king pins? Thanks so much for the help.
Ball joints and if they have never been changed get yer wallet out. Most people do em b4 60,000....Jack a wheel up and grab it on the botom and top and see if there is any play,
I checked the ball joints and they looked good. I had a shop suspension shop check them and change the tires back to stock. It seems ok now. The old ones where toast anyway. They thought maybe the steering box. I looked at my reapir cd and there looks like there might be a joint the steering shaft. In my younger days I had a 86 ramcharger 4x4 it ate those joints. After the fords for the last 14 years. I wonder if that problems is back. I will see how it goes think this. I am not a fan of stock tire sizes.
I think I have it now. The U joints in the front axle are shot. I did not think they would turn with the hubs unlocked but they do. I will replace them today or tomorrow.
