What's the chances of a cam phaser issue?

Hello guys. Quick question. I have the opportunity to purchase an incredibly clean 07 150 Super Cab with 60 thousand on the OD. This would be my first 5.4 if I decide to go with it. After a ton of research I'm getting nervous about the cam phasers issue. Is this a problem that ALL 5.4 engines have? Is it not a matter of if, but when it's going to happen? What's the percentage of people with this issue vs. without?
Thank you gentleman.
I have an 05 F150, just sold an 85 F250 and have been a member of this forum for some time now. I have been helped out in the past significantly, so hopefully you can lead me to I wise decision.

I would take it on a good long test drive and listen to the noises it makes. Take the oil cap off and look in the valve cover with a flashlight to check for sludge. It already has the newest phasers in so you shouldn't have problems with them. However, the 3v are known for chain tensioners and roller rockers failing and 2007 had a problem with the thrust bearings on the crank wearing causing the crank to walk back and forth. With 60K on the clock if it's going to have any of those issues they should start showing up.

That's what I'm thinking. For as clean as this thing is, with only Sixty on it, there's a greater possibility that something could have scared the PO out of it. I took it on a sixty mile round trip and didn't hear, or feel anything out of the ordinary. I'd hate to get rid of my trusty 05 4.2 to go with something that every little sound I'm going to be worried about, but I'm a ford man and I need more truck than my 2 wheel drive, six cylinder, standard cab, five speed.

Wow, nobody knows! Is it a lot, or a small amount compared to how many trucks were made with the five four. In other words, is their a GOOD chance I can expect this issue?

Man it's one of those things nobody knows for sure. It you drove it for that long and it sounds good than its good for now. It's an 07 so if it was built in the later half of the 07's then it most likely has all the updated parts already and chances are it will be less likely to form problems like the earlier models do. So I'd say chances are less. I have an 04 5.4 and it ticks and I believe it's a tensioner but it idles, accelerates, and drives great. It can cause more problems later or it may not. I intend to fix it eventually. I just had plugs changed and am waiting to do the timing when the time is right. But all in all it's a great truck. If I were you I'd probably go for it. Hope that helps you a bit.

it seems to be a hit and miss thing atleast from my personal experience.

i know of 3 5.4 3V's i see on a daily basis that have no issues, and never personally ran into it...except the 2006 i looked at last week had 53k on it and sounded like a diesel idling. so that would be a first for me.

all stock 2004 with 74k miles on it. dead silent no odd noises or anything..been a wonderful truck!

all stock 2007 with 40k on it. no odd noises but does feel like a bit of a vibration in the engine..no missing though and no noise.

all stock 2005 with 110k on it. no noises and just had the spark plugs replaced.

2006 Mark LT Cam Phaser issue

Hello to all,

I just recently joined this forum and what brought me here is a problem that I seem to see is apparent on these trucks. I just bought a 2006 Mark LT with a 128,000 miles on it. Extremely clean and for a very good price. I also bought a third party extended warranty. The truck is making that "diesel" sound at idle and seems to go away above 1500 rpm's is it a good assumption to believe my probelm is the Cam Phaser issue? Also, has anyone dealt with a third party warranty to know if they would have any issue with Ford repairing the Cam Phasers??

The ticking is most commonly failed seals in the tensioners which leak oil which isn't allow enough oil to reach the phasers, so you may not need the phasers themselves but need new tensioners and at that rate new guides, chains and seals. As for third party warranties you would have to read the fine print on what is covered exactly. From what I've heard they're not the best they cover stupid stuff and not major mechanicals. But like I said you need to read what is in the warranty. The warranty company may want their people working on the truck only but that should be in the fine print. Good luck man.

Thank you for the information, I plan on taking the truck to Ford and have them provide their assessment. As to the extended warranty, it does in fact cover the drivetrain, in addition to major electronic's (i.e. power window switchs, door locks etc..). However, due to mileage what it will not cover is bumper to bumper. I guess, the best thing to do, is have Ford reachout to the Warranty Company once they have made a determination on what is wrong. Thanks again.

2004 F150 new phasers @ 74000 miles

Had mine replaced. Ran ok but don't care for metallic knocking noises on my vehicles. Quiet now.

I just replaced my phasers, lash adjusters, cam followers and vct solenoids on my 05 f150. If you're some what mechanically inclined, buy the truck. If nothing goes bad on it consider yourself lucky. If they do go, do all of the above when you're in there...it's not really that hard. I did a TON of research on this and I came across quite a few people saying they have 170k, 210k etc on these 04-08 3v motors with 0 issues.

Are you able to get an extended 100k warranty on it? Mine started making noise right around 98k.

I was told and read many times, knocking/ticking noise at idle and goes away over 1200rpm - cam phasers. Goes away when warm - exhaust manifold. Stays with it all the way up through the rpm range - lash adjusters.

Mine was the latter.
