I heard that the EB edition broncos came with an overhead console. if so anyone know where i can get one????, have tried the usual places, wrecking yards etc...
It may have been standard equipment on some of the later ones but not on my 89 though. You can get them almost anywhere for less than $100. if you just look at different websites, this one included.
Mine has one, and I really like it. It has compartments for sunglass storage, garage door opener, bright map lights, and the digital thermometer/compass display. They can be tough to find, as I have read several posts of people looking for them on this board. I keep an eye out every time I run through the junkyard, and haven't found one yet.
If you mean the head console to place you sunglasses, insert you garage door opener and turn on the indoor lights, I have one in my 96 EB, its pretty useless, sun glasses fall out, garage door doesn't fit. The only item I find usefully is the temp and compass display. I keep my remotes for the stereo and dvd player in the compartment. By the way my Stereo cranks, get a drop down DVD screen (replace you interor over head light) and install a DVD player in your middle console, 700watts of Bronco supplied surround sound, its awesome on long distance trips
I'd have to agree with Will, the only thing I use my console for is storing my insurance info and navigating with the compass.
I wrote a pretty whiny message about this a little while back and someone told me that the ICE message in the thermo. was to let you know that there was ice on the road. My doesn't seem to work that way. It tells me when there is ice on the car, but I can kinda figure that out on my own.
I had thought about trying to expand its usefulness by converting it to show trip/milage info, but I haven't done the required research yet. I guess I'm just hoping someone will do it for me.
Personally, I wouldn't put a ton of effort into finding and installing a console if I didn't have one.
I found this on e-bay while trying to find some sort of insert for the center console. anyone heard of one? the bronco console is too big and i could use some sort of insert to pull out and to keep things more orgaized.
I found one in the junk yard for 50 bucks off a 95 eddie bauer. Was easy to install and I think it was worth the money. I like the temp and compass dispaly and the extra lights. I use the sunglass storage for other things such as stereo remote. I would not pay 300 for one (dealership price) but for 50 bucks it was a cheap interior upgrade.
lukedraper - Familiar problem - ha ha ha Have you looked in the storage (etc) deptartments of walmart (etc). theres this one thing called an "art caddy" - it's kind of deep, but somewhat thin - with a handle. We found one that fits inside our console. It's not too big - so we can put something large (CB, area phonebook - etc) Under and next to it - while still keeping all the small stuff (tools, first aid, etc) organized and easy to remove. Measure your console opening and use that when measuring the art caddy.
You could also use a "shoebox" - they sell plastic "shoeboxes" (about 90cents - rubbermaid) in the storage section - you can fit two of those in the console. That way - if you have LOTS of small tools, etc. You can keep them together, and closed up. If neither if those work - or you don't like them - just look in the storage areas of stores. There are tons of small storage ideas out there.
good luck
I want the overhead console for the temp and compass as well as something to install my stereo digital eq in. there is no where to mount an equilizer anywhere else and thought it would look best mounted overhead....
Steve if you dont receieve payment on yours, I'll be happy to take it off your hands. is it a Bronco original?
Sorry - it's in a crate waiting to go on a truck and I'm not selling parts on FTE any more, either. But you can't install an EQ in it anyway - it's way too small. You'd have to build your own console for that, and that's pretty easy. If you go to SuperFord and look me up in the registry, you can see mine. (I'll link my signature to that site soon.)
You can have a compass VERY easily by swapping in a compass mirror from a luxury car or SUV. I find them in junkyards all the time, so look around. They should cost under $50, but be sure to get the wiring (at least long enough to reach into your headliner) AND the mounting button off the glass! It's most likely different from yours, so you'll have to glue it onto your windshield.
A VERY few of the OE mirrors have the built-in thermometer, but you can buy an aftermarket mirror with auto-dimming, compass, thermometer, and even a TV screen for a rear-view camera. They're only $200-500. JCWhitney sells those.
I'd mount the EQ under the dash like a brake controller, or inside the center console - once it's set, you really don't need access to it very often.
I got a sensor from the junkyard and I also got lucky. My bronco was already wired somewhat for a overhead console. I had the wiring from the dash to the grill with the sensor plug. It was that way from the factory. I got a wiring diagram and wired the harness to the console pluged in the sensor and my compass works great. Steve 83 helped me realize what the plug was that I had up by my drivers side head light. I thought it was some kind of secondary battery hook up. But it was the wires and plug for a temp sensor. There was a guy who posted here who hooked up a expedition overhead console in his bronco and wired the whole thing himself compass and temp. He said it was not to tough of a job to do. If you have a library close, they should have shop manuels that you can make copies from. That is where I got my wiring diagram.
