I have a simple crank-fan-alternator double belt system on my '67 (390). The problem is that the alternator, when mounted using existing brackets, touches the block. The pulley on it is actually off alignment about 1/4" from the other two pulleys.
I have tried a new alternator, but that doesn't fix the problem. Is it possible that I need to replace the brackets?
Well if it mounts the same way as a 429/460 alt. you can try shimming or cutting the aluminum spacer on the pivot bolt. I had to do this when swapping to an aluminum water pump. There is also the option of spacing the pulley on the alt. . Be sure you get the nut tight. I had one spin off at about 5 k rpm. The 100 amp alt on a 460 also requires a longer adjustment bracket to clear the block due to the increased diameter. And of course a slightly longer belt.
My alternator is very close to the block, but not quite touching. There is an aluminum spacer that slides onto the long pivot bolt that passes through the lower mounting point, it keeps the rear of the alternator a little away from the block.
The rubber surround to the wiring connector on the back of the alt is just about touching the block. The upper bracket (that pivots) is pretty much straight - it doesn't angle out from the water pump at all in a front and back sense.
