I'm on my first road trip this weekend after doing all the work on my truck.
I drove 6 1/2 hrs, pulling an empty 6x12 uhual open trailer. I had the tuner in the mild street/ pull position and sure could feel that empty trailer behind me... My fuel mpg was just under 12 mpg going a constant 65, turning 2400 rpm . Who ever said, you can get 18 mpg???
since my rear tank is out of service, I had to stop every 150 Mls for fuel.
One of the issues I had, is that my transmission leaks on the rear output shaft.. Got some oil spray on the front of the trailer.
Another issue I notice is, that every now and then I loose for several hrs the power below 2000rpm.. Turbo ain't kicking in and fuel pressure is good... No smoke under wot... Then after a while I got full torque again... Something sure is wired..
No scan gauge... No exhaust leak and no intake leak. No miss.. . Cel is not on either. Sur e is wired, as sometimes I take off from the gas station and I have a lot of power.. Then I shut the truck off, start it again and missing power... Could there be in issue with the ipr on the back of the hpop ?
Once I get back. Home,I believe I will order me the ae enhance package for ford
I agree Todd. I made good power with leaky uppipes too. I however did notice a loss of power with the leaky manifold gasket. But that would be constant, not every now and then. I was just throwing that out there to see.
If you are going to get ae, you should get it figured out easier.
I was debating getting it before I leave.. But the boss told me, I should wait till I get back,in case we need additional funds on the travel
But I do have a thought, and wonder what you guys think: I have issues with my switching valve not switching right, so I leave it on the front tank. I had power loss before, but also low fuel pressure, which happened to be a clogged pickup tube due to the coating inside the tank separating. I installed a screen on the pickup tube.. I wonder if I just have insufficient amount of fuel due to stuff around the screen.. Even though my pressure is steady.
One more question here.. I guess I lost a little bit of tranny fluid... Since it is not easy to fill, does a little low level in the zf hurt on travel, since I won't be shifting, but for about 4 times to stop and get fuel?
It wouldnt surprise me to some level if that tank selector valve could have a hand in it, as when I was first reading your post, my original thought was up pipes, then fuel delivery, such as filter, then IPR.
My thought, something fuel delivery is going on! I would start checking it out, run a pressure gauge, check filter, and go from there!
thanks for all the info.. I think i found my problem: the plug fir the fuel bowl harness, which has the connector for the ipr had a bad connection.. i put a ty-rap around to force it together and the truck ran fine.. except the fuel milage though.
i will replace that plug propably tomorrow. I did make it home without any further problems
I'm guessing you have a 5 speed. I get 12.5 to 13.5mpg's in my 97 automatic with 4:53 gears, or the gears are close to that. I don't remember exactly what they are. I know it weighs around 14,000lbs, and is as aerodynamic as a brick. I get better mileage at 60mph. Pulling that box behind you really adds the wind drag big time. Above 45mph and the wind drag increases drastically for every 5mph or so. I also have the Mini Swamps in my 97 too. Runs really strong even with the chip removed. I have a tune called TravisF350 on the chip that actually gets me the best mileage. But it's too hot for me to run all the time. I usually just run it when I'm in Indiana on flat ground. It's also hard on the stock E40D tranny!
