odometer display out

05 v8 5_4. Xlt

Odometer display quit on me. This is the co.pass and temp as well. I have also noticed that when I come to a complete stop and then take off a again, the auto lock feature activates like I had put it in park and then back to drive. Thinking I could have an electrical issue here. Has anyone seen this?

My truck does the same thing. 2004 F150. Haven't figured it out.

so yours is intermittent? Mine has done this once before, after about 3 weeks of sitting while I was away. It did a few weird electrical things, like the AC looked like it was on but it wasn't (I think). Everything went back to normal. I just attributed it to it sitting for so long. It does sit often though, sometimes a week at a time b/c I have a company vehicle. This time it went out, came back for one trip and has been out ever since. Does yours do the door lock thing too?
I'm thinking of pulling the battery negative and leaving it off for an hour or so to kind of "reboot" it. Going to wait until this crazy heat breaks Monday though
Let me know more about yours and I will let you know if the battery thing works.

Mine is not intermittent - it is very permanent. I was having problems with airbag system, and it was suggested that the light was bad on the cluster. Nope - the light is an LED, not a regular light. But during the process of pulling the cluster and reinstalling it, somehow I lost the OD/Compass/temperature display. And then the weird door lock thing started up, whenever the truck moderately accelerates.

I pulled the battery, and shorted both the positive and negative leads together to drain off any charge from a capacitor, leaving it sit for several hours. No luck. I've resigned myself that at some point I will need to replace the cluster. I've held off because I am unsure if a replacement cluster requires special programming to work with the truck.

well I finally got around to pulling the battery - before I just got online to read your reply, and yeah, no luck. I would assume it's still calculating the mileage, right? Mine has very much become permanent as well. It's weird that we both have the door lock thing going. There's gotta be a common denominator here.
Maybe someone else can shed some light.
I'm with you on replacing the whole cluster. Sounds like a cluster, LOL
Sorry I didn't get back sooner.
Stay in touch on this! Have a good one!

Something makes me wonder if it is still somehow related to the air bag circuit. When you first start your truck, does the yellow air bag symbol light up on the dash for a few seconds?

Mine used to but I don't think it does any more.

On rare events, I can be driving and get a single "chime". Not the 5x5 chime indicating problems with the air bag.

I have not paid attention to the airbag light but I will on the next drive.
I do also have an abnormal chime. Usually what was normal, when you had the engine running and you opened a door you'd get a single chime. Now I have noticed that if it's running and I have a door opened for a bit (happens a lot b/c I have little ones I have to strap in) it chimes at random when the door is open. It did not do that before. Glad you mentioned that as I forgot that is another symptom I am experiencing. I will check the air bag light and get back with you on that.

sorry for just getting back...
Well low and behold about 2 weeks ago, the dern thing came back on, all other symptoms quit (doors locking, random chimes). All for one day. Been out ever since with all of the other symptoms back. I'm lost. My airbag light does come on when I start the truck.
Read that some prior to 2004 trucks had trouble with solder joints to the cluster. Starting to wonder if this might be it...
Really hesitant to start tearing apart the dash to find out and I'm sure my dealer would want a pretty penny.
Would appreciate any additional info ro to hear from anyone else having this problem(s)

I agree that it is likely a loose connection. My problems started shortly after I had the airbag harness recall "fix" done by a dealer. I'm suspicious that there is something loose in the column. My plan is to take the plastic covers off and inspect it if the weather rises up to something reasonable for me to work in the garage.

The console/dash display comes out very easily. I inspected mine for bad solder connections and could find none. I'm have some vacation time coming up so perhaps then.

I'm no electrician, but if everything worked again for even a little while, there is a break in the electronic path somewhere. The clusters are infamous for causing mystery electronic issues like this. The break could easily be hard to detect with the eye.

And specifically a bad ground connection somewhere can cause all sorts of odd, seemingly unrelated issues with your electrical system.

A weak battery can cause strange problems in these trucks. Worth a shot..

One other symptom I have - the after market remote start no longer works.

I took the dash panels off and wiggled the wires. When I moved the left connector, the air bag light would flicker. I then removed the console to look for a loose solder joint and examined the connector for a bad crimp.

The only thing I found was that there appears to be a resistor missing from the R115 spot.

I'm going to order a replacement console and see if it fixes things.

Suspicious left connector:

The spot for R115 is in the middle of the picture.

Success! I replaced the gage cluster with a used unit I purchased from LKQ on Ebay. Made sure the battery was disconnected as I worked on it. My odometer now works. Note - the mileage reads 139k, it should read about 165k. Anybody doing this repair, please be honest on the mileage when you sell your vehicle.

It will be curious to see if the random power door lock issue goes away.
