As of tomorrow I will own my first powerstroke 2001 F 350 it 450,000 miles on it rebuilt at 300,000 and a brand new transmission. Anyone have anytips for a brand new powerstroke owner. bully dog has a programmer for 700 bucks I was looking at heard lots of good things about them but I ask you for your opinions because being current and past owners you have a better grasp on the powerstroke tonight thanks for all your advice. Welcome to FTE. You will enjoy the truck. Before spending big money on a generic tuner read all you can on the numerous tuner discussions found here, then make your decision. Wisdom and knowledge from this group is always a blessing. Have fun.

Make sure that you have gauges first or get a system that has them as part of the package. Very important to monitor EGT's when running tunes.

X2 you will get more out of the truck by going with a custom tuner. A ts style chip or dp tuner is what most people prefer.

Welcome to FTE.
I have used a couple of Bully Dog products (programmer and flip chip) and the programmer worked the best. The flip chip performed very poorly. If I had to do it all over again, I would skip the Bully Dog products entirely and go with one of the various custom tuners here. If your transmission has been heavily modified, then PHP has some excellent calibrations that will transform the way your truck runs. I have their tunes on a couple of my trucks and pleased with the product. They are reasonably price as well.

PHP uses a TS style chip as do several other vendors so you have a bunch of options. There are folks here using Gearhead, Swamps, BTS etc and most everyone seems happy with them. Another choice is DP Tuner who uses a different type of chip but the use is about the same.

For the budget you are talking...I would consider the DP Infinity or the PHP Gryphon CTS. Here are some links:
INFINITY-DX Touch Screen 7.3L NOW AVAILABLE (Price includes 8g SD card and 1 VIN License with purchase) - Featured Products

I hope this helps.

speedracer54729,
You have come to the best place in the WORLD for information about these trucks. The people are are fantastic and will help you do just about anything you want to do.

My suggestion is read, read, read, before you do anything. With as many miles as you have on your truck you will probably need to do some general maintenance. I changed ball joints and front bearings today. You will also want to mod your truck so pick a mod and read all you can before buying anything. I have a BIGG BOOST device and a K&N style intake sitting in my basement that will never see my truck. $130 I would never have spent if I had come here first. Glad you found FTE before you got your truck.

If your going to mod your truck for power of any kind get gauges. You need to know what it's doing in order to protect it.

Welcome aboard,

I don't think I would go that far to say you should stay away from Bully Dog stuff.....it's just that you can get a lot more for your money with the comparable DP or PHP product. If you are going to modify your calibration then you might as well get your money's worth.

I would go as far as saying stay away from off the shelf tuners. I bought the Banks kit and everything about the Banks kit is great except for their tuner. It has generic tunes and I could barley tell a difference. So I bought a DP and holy cow it is night and day difference with custom tunes. Dont waste your money on off the shelf tuners...JMO

Just to reiterate no mater what you do if you go with tunes make sure you have some way to monitor your engine. DP and PHP as well as some others have complete monitoring systems built in to their tuners for these issues. May be less expensive in the long run to go that way even if the up-front cost is more. Just my $.02 worth

Drive your truck for a couple of months before you 'chip it'. Get to know your truck and make sure everything is up to snuff. Then and only then if you want to 'chip it' do so. You have to establish a base of if,what, where, when, why on your truck and then you will really understand and appreciate or hate the changes that the 'bully dog' does to your baby.

Not sure about your region, but 16.5" rims are a dime a dozen around here since that tire size is being phased out. I see them on craigslist all the time, either cheap or free.
