Pull and Payload Capacity

I have owned a 1996 F-250 supercab 4X4 with the 7.3 litre diesel engine for some time and now want to tow a 5th wheel. Before purchasing a 5th wheel I would like to know what the max. pull and payload capacities are. My owners manual conveniently omits any details in the "Trailer Towing Table" to this vehicle with the 7.3 diesel engine.

Details from the capacity plate are as follows, GVWR 8800 (3991) lbs (kgs)
REAR GAWR 6084 (2759) Axle code is 39 indicating a 3.55 differential ratio.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jim T. (jimbuoy)

If I remember correctly they had 20k lb combined weight rating from the factory. Do not believe it made a difference on axle ratio. I do seem to remember it being with an automatic though. I would look it up in my sales brochure but I will not be home before the end of October. I would go and have the truck weighed. I would guess your truck weighs about 6500 lbs. I run with my p/u camper and trailer with Jeep on board around 16k lbs and it has no problems. When towing my 31 ft Holiday Rambler TT it weighs in at just under 14k lbs and it pulls it like nothing is behind it (almost). Just noticed you have a lower GVWR than mine so I am guessing you have a manual, I think they had a 16k lbs GCWR. There are many on this forum with manuals so I'm sure they will chime in. My truck has a 9700lb GVWR, automatic, 4:10, 2wd F250 SC.

Something else is if the truck is all stock..modded or if and when it will get improvements.i know it wont make the ratings change but will make it last longer and pull easier. What size and weight are you looking or wanting?

Pull and Payload Capacities

Thanks for the reply. Just had the F-250 weighed and it came in at 6702 with one tank empty, so the dry weight would be about 6537. You were bang on. Mine is an automatic so I'm not sure why the GVWR would be so much less than yours.

The truck has been modified but I have to talk to the previous owner to find out exactly what was done. I know it has a much larger turbo than stock, has a chip installed with regular, towing and performance settings, and a K & N air filter. Transmission appears stock but has been rebuilt.

I am looking to tow a 5th wheel with a dry weight of about 12000 and a pin weight of about 2100. I am familiar with the 8 to 10 mile long hills in Arizona with 6 to 8 percent grades. My diesel motor home pulls those hills at 45 to 50 mph. Would you anticipate any less performance with my truck/5th wheel combination? Also, any suggestions about using /not using overdrive?

Thanks for your information.
