Hey all. Recently my truck developed an issue where the battery is slowly draining and won't hold a charge. My amp and subs also quit working at the same time, so I assume that is related.
Several of the people I've talked to think it's a problem with a body or frame ground, as the amp is grounded on the cab. If that were the case, where are the ground points located at to check for corrosion or damage?

From what I have learned from the Experts on this site is this: Isolate what is causing the problem and then repair same. Use a test light and put the neg. clip on the positive battery connection. Remove the negative cable from battery making sure it does not touch any ground surface. Touch test light tip to body ground. you should get a light. now find the fuse for courtesy lights and remove. make sure no interior lights are on. take out underhood light. Do you still have a test light on condition? If you do then start pulling fuses until the test light goes out. When it does that is your draw. Note: you may have to pull the PCM fuse also because it draws for the KAM. I hope I got that right if not since someone has responded to your query the good folks on here will check it now...right rla >?
I charged the battery last night and I guess it doesnt seem to be draining just sitting there, just doesnt charge when the truck is running. Its been blazing hot out the past few days but ill use some of Whaletailin's advice and do some investigating this weekend.
I was in Wauwatosa the last few days. It was very hot for this time of year. If the battery is not charging then you need to verify the alternator is charging. Check the green/red "exciter" wire is hot when the key is in the Start/Run position. If you still have a 2G alternator check the big plastic plug-in as well. It's well know to have corroded connections that eventually drop enough voltage to melt the plug which then catches on fire.
Great troubleshooting advice from Whaletailin. To add a little more.....a bad ground will not cause a battery drain.
Aghh..But may I say, A bad ground in the right place, may prevent your Alternator from charging the battery properly...hense..a battery can appear to not hold a charge.
I just had the same problem! My alternator was bad and Then replaced it with a 130 amp after I did that It worked for a little while then in started to get a no charge issue and I finally chased it down to the green/ground wire that comes out of the alternator. It must have got corroded pretty badly and when I went to look at it, it broke. So I spliced in a new wire and now it works great!!
great!..for some reason, people seem to always look at the positive wire as being the important one....the ground wire is just as important...one without the other..is nothing!
