I've got a question that will for sure show my ignorance with a/c's. I have lost all cold air from my '95 XLT (5.8). I bought the truck used a few months back, so have no real knowledge of a/c trouble with it. It was blowing cold when I got it, now it's hot. I noticed also that the clutch is not turning. Now could this have something to do with there being NO oil in the system? If I were to charge it, could that possibly kick the clutch in? Also, more improtantly, which is the High port and which is the Low port. I was under the assumtion that the Low port was on the right hand side running into the compressor (looking at the engine) and the High port was on the left hand side. Could someone please clarify for me which is the high and which is the low side. I would like to charge the system myself if i could since I have already bought the oil for it. Thanks!!!!

Low freon could be your problem. First, put a set of gauges on it to determine if it is low on freon. If so, you probably have a leak somewhere, which will have to be repaired, then the proper proceedures to refill the system.

If your not sure on the High and Low side, take it to a Pro to get it right or get advice. If you happen to open the valve without eye protection, your eye will freeze on contact. if working properly low side generally is cooler and HIgh side hotter to touch. if it not working cour not going to tell. could have refrig but not cooling some how. have someone check first mount inside. As sou ponted out clutch is not turning. it will turn only uon request. I am not certified in this area but I Look to books like Haynes and Chilton for general ideas. they do a good over view.
